The wood industry forms the backbone of our region, encompassing sawmills, planning mills, component manufacturers, house builders, and carpentry shops.
This industry is present in all 15 municipalities of Västerbotten. Today, the county’s 110 wood industry companies employ 2,500 people, with 80% of these companies having fewer than 25 employees and 90% located in rural areas.
The wood industry, which consists predominantly of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), provides more employment opportunities than sectors like mining and metal industries. Collectively, the wood industry generates a turnover of SEK 8.8 billion.

Västerbotten is one of Sweden’s largest forest counties, with half of its area covered by productive forest land. The trend is shifting towards greater processing of raw materials, with an increasing focus on the function, design, and feel of wood products. Additionally, the industry is making strides in exploring new international markets and contributing to the green transition
